<Cheolsan4Dong People> exhibition preface, 2017 (Suejin Shin, Director, Ilwoo Space) Cheolsan4dong is an administrative section that was officialized in Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi province in 1981. It is said that it has been named after a village in Chinese character meaning iron head. It is located in the foot of Doduk Mountain where the legend has it that it was where envoys of the old times used to have a gathering to discuss virtue and ethics. Kim Moon expanded the historical, administrative, and geographical meaning through building of relationship with the people of Cheolsan4dong. The artist experimented the depth and the breadth of experience that can be shared with others through art and photography, which led the development of Cheolsan4dong, Cheolsan4dong Chronicle, and Cheolsan4dong Story. The core of the project consists of self- portrait of participating local people who themselves chose where the portrait was to be shot. Using large format camera which gives only an original without copies, they were set as the main character against their most familiar background. in order to realize this project, the artist ran a pre-questionnaire with the volunteers beforehand to accommodate their shooting preferences. After the shooting, he interviewed them to collective their story. In addition, their account of history tied to their chosen place has been presented in present perspective. The most remarkable role of the artist here lies in creating a place for an art experience where the invited audience becomes converted to the subject as opposed to being an object. It is easy to say that everybody is the protagonist of one's own life. But there is rarely an opportunity to realize or experience it. This is why Cheolsan4dong is precious.
