<Beyond the Lens> exhibition preface, 2010 (Nam-eun Kim, Curator, Shinhan gallery) Kim moon has chronicled urban scenes through his lens. He looks at city scenes through the gaze of others, and then enters the city with a subjective gaze, like he did in Hwanghak-dong. Hwangkak-dong is a lively market area selling a variety of things. However, what he noted is not noisy market scenes, but the bundles street vendors tied up and left there after finishing a day s work. The bundles that spent a night in the dark began another life the next day. We may feel the presence of merchants in these bundles, or their self-portrait. Although his records are heartrending, and might soon disappear, his conceptual approach lets viewers feel his sincerity. He makes sure the camera lens represents contemporary life in the context of historicity and placeness that Hwanghak-dong bears.
